How to Choose a Weighted Blanket

Choosing your first weighted blanket can feel like a small decision until you actually start shopping. Suddenly there are sizes, weights, fill types, fabrics, and price points to weigh against each other. This guide walks you through every choice in plain language, so you end up with a blanket you'll actually use.

Start with weight

This is the single most important choice. A weighted blanket that's too light won't feel calming. One that's too heavy can feel oppressive, especially for first-time users.

The 10 percent guideline: Choose a blanket roughly 10 percent of your body weight, rounded to the nearest available size.

Quick reference chart:

Up to 70 lb body weight, 5 to 7 lb blanket

70 to 110 lb, 10 lb blanket

110 to 150 lb, 12 to 15 lb blanket

150 to 200 lb, 15 to 20 lb blanket

Over 200 lb, 20 to 25 lb blanket

When in doubt, size down. A slightly lighter blanket is easier to get used to. You can always size up later.

Size

A weighted blanket should cover your body, not the entire bed. Unlike a duvet, the weight should rest on you, not drape off the sides. If a weighted blanket hangs over the edge of the mattress, gravity pulls it down and reduces the calming pressure where you need it.

Throw size (40 x 60 inches): for couches, lap use, single sleepers.

Twin size (48 x 72 inches): single adult sleepers.

Full or Queen size (60 x 80 inches): single sleeper who prefers a wider blanket.

King size (80 x 87 inches): single sleeper who wants full coverage.

Sharing with a partner? Buy two individual weighted blankets, not one large one. The weight calculation is per person, and a shared blanket dilutes the effect.

Fill type

The weight inside the blanket can be one of a few materials. They are not all equal.

Glass micro-beads: Most common in higher-quality blankets. Small, smooth, evenly distributed, quiet, and don't add bulk. The premium standard.

Plastic poly pellets: Cheaper, but bulkier, noisier, and warmer. Avoid if you can.

Knitted yarn (no beads): Made from chunky chenille or cotton yarn knit into a heavy fabric. Breathes well, looks beautiful, and is machine-washable without a cover. Excellent for warm sleepers.

Steel shot beads: Heavier per volume than glass beads, allowing for thinner blankets at the same weight. Premium option, less common.

Cover fabric

Most weighted blankets have a removable cover. The cover is what touches your skin, so this matters more than people expect.

Cotton: Soft, breathable, machine-washable, good year-round. The safest choice.

Bamboo or lyocell: Naturally cooling, silky to the touch, ideal for hot sleepers.

Minky or plush: Cozy and warm, but can feel hot in summer. Great for winter.

Linen: Premium, breathable, lasts decades, but more expensive and wrinkles easily.

When a weighted blanket is not right for you

Weighted blankets are not safe for infants and toddlers under 5 years old. They are also not recommended for anyone with respiratory conditions like COPD or sleep apnea unless cleared by a doctor, anyone with circulation issues, anyone with claustrophobia or sensory sensitivity to being held down, or anyone unable to remove the blanket independently. If you have a medical condition, speak with your healthcare provider before purchase.

A simple decision framework

If you're still unsure, follow this:

  1. Calculate 10 percent of your body weight. That's your target weight.
  2. 2. Choose throw size if you'll use it on a couch, twin or full if it's just for sleep.
  3. 3. Pick glass-bead fill with a cotton or bamboo cover. This combination works for most people.
  4. 4. If you run warm, swap to a knitted weighted blanket instead.
  5. 5. Read the return policy. The ability to exchange for a different weight is worth more than saving $20.

Once it arrives

Use your new weighted blanket every night for two weeks before deciding whether it works for you. The first few nights can feel unfamiliar, some people sleep deeper immediately, others take a week to adjust.
